“Jiama” Printing Workshop

Workshop
14:00 - 17:00
11/05 au 11/05
Ada X - 4001 Rue Berri #201, Montréal, QC H2L 4H2

In this workshop, we will introduce the tradition of “Jiama” making from the west Yunnan province of China. In Yunnan, “Jiama” is used to express hope during festivals, as well as to communicate between the human realm and the celestial realm. People put on “Jiama” in their homes and sometimes burn them to wish for good luck. In traditional practices, artisans of “Jiama” carve out different gods and guardians on wood or slate for long use. Right now in China, people create different “Jiama” as they like. With rubber, we can also reach the same level of craftsmanship with lower cost, and more fun.

During this workshop, we will prepare the basic kit for you to engage with rubber print-making of “Jiama,” including a special burin, a rubber, and materials to transfer printed line art to the rubber. We will prepare some existing classic Jiama for you to pick up, or you can bring whatever you like to do print-making with. The size is ideally around 6 cm*8cm (printed black and white) if you want to bring your own art.
